BIOGRAPHY

Dominik Beykirch has been working as a freelance conductor at numerous European opera houses and concert halls since the autumn of 2025. Prior to this, he spent over a decade shaping the artistic profile of the Deutsches Nationaltheater (DNT) and the Staatskapelle Weimar, most recently as Music Director, maintaining a consistently high standard throughout.

During the 2026/27 season, Dominik Beykirch will cultivate a close relationship with the Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle Schwerin. As Conductor in Residence, he conceived a concert cycle titled Of the Beginning – Of the End – Of the Aftermath, featuring works by Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Johannes Brahms, Sergei Prokofiev and Leokadiya Kashperova. He will be accompanying Guy Braunstein, Charlotte and Friedrich Thiele, and Magdalena Lucjan as soloists in these performances. He will be joined again by the presenter Malte Arkona and the tenor Taejun Sun for the MeckProms, and as part of his schedule will also be presenting an opera chorus gala held as part of a masterclass of the German Music Council. Other highlights of Dominik Beykirch’s 2026/27 season include his return to the podium of the Royal Danish Opera to conduct a revival of Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème, some notable debuts with the Romanian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the North German Philharmonic, as well as some exciting concert projects, such as collaborating with the SWR Symphony Orchestra and SWR Big Band to celebrate the renowned jazz ensemble's 75th anniversary.

Dominik Beykirch consistently garners international acclaim for his operatic conducting. Recent highlights include new productions of Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Die tote Stadt at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar and Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus at the Mecklenburgisches Staatstheater Schwerin, as well as performances of both Hänsel und Gretel and Carmen at the Semperoper. At the Deutsches Nationaltheater (DNT), his initiative led to the first performance in 170 years of the opera Samson by Swiss composer Joachim Raff (director: Calixto Bieito) in October 2022. During the 2019/2020 season, Beykirch enjoyed great success with Paul Dessau's opera Lanzelot, which had not been performed for 40 years. Directed by Peter Konwitschny, this production was named 'Rediscovery of the Year' by the trade journal Opernwelt, which also nominated Beykirch as 'Conductor of the Year'. The complete recording of this opera received significant press attention, winning the German Record Critics' Prize and Opernwelt's 'CD of the Year' award. It was also nominated for the International Opera Awards. New productions such as Martin G. Berger's award-winning production of Richard Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos (winner of the FAUST Prize 2020), Friederike Blum's Salome, Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito's I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Barbora Horáková's Der fliegende Holländer, Andrea Moses's Aida and La traviata, and Tobias Kratzer's L'italiana in Algeri were all very well received by audiences and the trade press. In recognition of their conceptual work in the opera department of the Deutsches Nationaltheater (DNT), Dominik Beykirch, Michael Höppner (senior dramaturg) and Andrea Moses (opera director) were awarded the 2024 German Theatre Publishers' Award. Thanks to the precision of his craftsmanship, his sensitivity to the needs of singers, and his musical enthusiasm, Beykirch has also created exceptional theatrical events at other opera houses, such as the Leipzig Opera, the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, and the Theatre in Chemnitz.

When it comes to concerts, Dominik Beykirch has long been a highly sought-after guest conductor. He has collaborated with numerous renowned orchestras, including the HR, MDR, SWR and WDR symphony orchestras, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Halle, the Augsburg Philharmonic, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt, the Bremen Philharmonic, and Philharmonie Zuidnederland. He has also performed with soloists such as Nemanja Radulovic, Cameron Carpenter, Vivi Vassileva, Jens Peter Maintz, Jan Vogler, Danae Dörken, Michael Barenboim, Alexander Krichel and Harriet Krijgh.

Dominik Beykirch enjoys an intensive collaborative relationship with the pianist Frank Dupree. Together, they have introduced Nikolai Kapustin's piano concertos to a wide audience. In the autumn of 2026, the Capriccio label will release a third joint album featuring the Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 3, accompanied by the SWR Symphony Orchestra and the SWR Big Band. For the recording of Piano Concerto No. 5 – released in February 2023 and a recipient of the International Classical Music Award and the Diapason d'Or – Dominik Beykirch was nominated for the OPUS Klassik award as Conductor of the Year. A recording of Ludger Vollmer’s Violin Concerto (featuring soloist Gernot Süßmuth) was released on the audite label in July 2026. Additionally, Berlin Classics released a recording of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf (with the Dresden Philharmonic and Malte Arkona as narrator) as well as the album Clarinet Concertos, with Sebastian Manz performing Carl Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto together with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken under the direction of Dominik Beykirch.

Dominik Beykirch completed his studies at the Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar, studying conducting under Prof. Nicolás Pasquet, Prof. Gunter Kahlert and Martin Hoff. He gained valuable artistic inspiration from renowned conductors such as Bernard Haitink, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Ton Koopman, among others, and as a scholarship holder in the Conductors' Forum of the German Music Council. He now shares his experience in masterclasses and by teaching at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig. During the winter semester of 2024/25, he also taught the main Orchestral Conducting class at the Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar.
